6 Must Eats in Bali – Bali Food Guide

After several trips to Bali and continuously raving about the amazing prices and delicious food, we thought it was only appropriate to share our culinary research with all of you! If you’re heading to Bali soon, be sure and check out these 6 must eats in Bali!

1) Nasi Campur – My personal favorite and an Indonesian staple, this is a mixed rice dish that comes with a simple selection of steamed rice and side dishes. For anyone who loves to try a few bites of everything, this dish is for you! (You can get it vegetarian as well!) Some things to expect:

  • Plecing Kacang Panjang – steamed long beans with zesty tomato sambal and fried peanuts
  • Urab Klelimun Kacang Barak – coconut and cucumber salad with local fragrant salad sauce
  • Be Siap Megorent Base Manis – Balinese fried chicken served in sweet soya sauce

2) Mie Goreng – Another classic Indo dish of fried noodles is often served with vegetables and a choice of chicken, shrimp or pork. Sometimes with a fried egg on top, chicken sate sticks, prawn crackers and peanut sauce. Oh, and don’t forget the pickled vegetables!

3) Nasi Goreng – The most popular of all Bali dishes for the local people. Similar to Mie Goreng, but fried rice instead of noodles. Balinese people eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner pretty much every meal. Rice is grown everywhere in Bali so there’s never a shortage. I’ve never had a bad Nasi Goreng in Bali, from the 5 star resorts the roadside stalls. YUM!

4) Babi Guling (Suckling Pig) – is a pig seasoned with local herbs and spices then roasted whole. The tender meat is served on rice with stewed vegetables, pork sausage, fried pork meat and most importantly the crispy skin! It’s one of the most famous of Balinese dishes.

5) Gado-Gado – Translating to “Mix-mix” is basically a vegetable salad bathed in a classic peanut sauce. It’s typically served cold which I appreciate with all of the hot temperatures we get! This salad consists of boiled long beans, spinach, potato, corn, egg and bean sprouts coupled with cucumber, tofu and tempe.

6) Rujak Buah – another traditional Balinese dish, it is similar to fruit salad, the dish consists mainly of raw mango, pineapple, cucumber, and papaya. It is served with a spicy sweet and sour dressing of ground chilli, peanuts and palm sugar.
