Fun Facts About Antarctica

Resources

The continent as a whole contains about 90% of the planet's freshwater ice and around 70% of the total freshwater on Earth! Scientists claim that if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet were to melt, it would raise global sea levels by about 16 feet.

Southernmost

If you stand at the South Pole, you are at the southernmost point on Earth. It doesn’t matter which way you look, every direction is north. It’s based on the prime meridian, an imaginary line which passes through Greenwich in the UK at 0 degrees of longitude.

Ice Sheet

One of the most fascinating things about Antarctica is that it is, in fact, a landmass. The Antarctic ice sheet is the single biggest mass of ice in the world and can be over 2 miles thick.

Diamond Dust

Although there are low levels of precipitation in Antarctica, meteorological wonders thrive and diamond dust is one of them! Diamond dust is made of tiny ice crystals that precipitate out of humid air near the Earth’s surface. It’s a little like an icy fog.
