Fun Facts About wine

Champagne

A bottle of champagne has around 49 million bubbles! The characteristic bubbles that grace all champagnes are formed during a second fermentation process, because of the addition of sugar and yeast. The two ingredients react to form carbon dioxide and this creates millions of bubbles trapped in a very small space.

Bordeaux

The oldest vines planted in Bordeaux are at least 200 years old. The vines are said to have been planted just after the French Revolution. The city of Bordeaux is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Producing well upwards of 500,000 bottles annually Bordeaux is the largest producer of high-end wines.

Tuscany

The Chianti district is known as the “Heart of Tuscany." Authentic Chianti is made from 80% Sangiovese grapes. Chianti was historically associated with a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket, called a fiasco but they are only used by a few winemakers nowadays. Most Chianti is now bottled in more standard shaped wine bottles.

Europe Wine

The European Union is the world-leading producer of wine. Between 2016 and 2020, the average annual production was 165 million hectolitres. In 2020, it accounted for 45% of global wine-growing areas, 64% of production and 48% of consumption.
