Fun Facts About GEORGIA

WINE

There are more than 500 varieties of grapes in Georgia. The country has been making and perfecting wine for at least 8,000 years. The technique they use for their winemaking which involves a clay jar called a Qvevri has even been listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

Language

Georgia has its own language, one of the oldest in the world, with 33 letters. Over time Georgian script has evolved from its original form and has undergone three stages – Asomtavruli, Nuskhakhutsuri, and Mkhedruli. The latter is what Georgians use today

Music

Georgian vocal music has been passed down by ear for hundreds of years – possibly since the 5th century BC. Its tuning system is based on fifths rather than octaves, giving its choral music a rich and distinctive sound. Each of Georgia’s ethnic regions has its own typical harmony and way of singing.

Tbilisi

Tbilisi is a derivative of the Georgian word for warm (tbili). The name (the place of warmth) was therefore given to the city because of the area's numerous sulfuric hot springs.
