Grenada – The Spice Isle

Grenada is a 100 sqmi island in the far southern Caribbean, north of Trinidad and south of St Vincent & The Grenadines. Known as the Spice Isle for all of the nutmeg plantations on the island. Grenada definitely charmed me with its roadside fruit & vegetable stands, food trucks, colorful landscape and waterfalls. There are also many smaller islands surrounding the main island, all part of Grenada which are easily accessed via ferry and fun to explore.

ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Grand Anse- St George’s – Beach & Town
This is a pretty happening town in the South, with a great beach, good restaurants, and some (minimal) nightlife. Check out Coconuts on the beach for sunset, cocktails, and the food was good too! Grand Anse is where you’ll scuba dive if you’re interested in diving on the island, check out Native Spirit Scuba and tell them our friend Johanna sent you: http://nativespiritscuba.com/
  2. Stay in an old Sugar Mill!
There are SO many great self catering accommodations on Grenada. It’s the perfect place to have a little apartment with a kitchen, and just stay home and enjoy the view. Highly recommend: Sugar Mill Tower— We stayed in a restored sugar mill with multi tiered decks, a private plunge pool, and views in every direction. http://www.holidaygrenada.com/the-sugar-mill-tower

Nuts & Bolts:

Language: English is the official language, many locals speak Creole

Currency: Eastern Caribbean Dollar

Electric: 230V British style plugs, both plug & voltage adapter required from US standard

Driving: Is on the left side of the road, and roads are narrow and steep. Most cars on the island are stick shift but some rental agencies have a few automatics available. A car is necessary to really explore the island. Pro tip- book your rental car in advance, as the island has a limited supply and it’s fairly common for all the agencies to run out of available cars.

Airports: 1 airport, GND serves the island. American, Jet Blue and Air Canada all fly there.
