Join Meredith for seven days immersed in nature on Madeira! This island of Portugal has been touted as the “Hawaii of Europe” for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, lush vegetation, and stunning coastal scenery. You’ll be hiking hidden waterfalls and Madeira’s highest peak, as well as enjoying panoramic vistas at sunrise and sunset. Expect daily hiking adventures, as well as plenty of time to explore on your own from your boutique hotel that is centrally located in the downtown city of Funchal. Whether you’re coming for the hiking, the views, or to meet new friends, this journey has been crafted to leave you feeling grounded, inspired, and renewed.

Hi! My name is Meredith and I’m a nature, hiking, and outdoor content creator based in Newport, Rhode Island. You can find me on social at @meredithewenson enjoying one of my local nature trails or hiking hut-to-hut in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and around the world.

I love to create experiences that bring women into the outdoors so they can experience the grounding and connected feeling of being immersed in nature. At times that might mean stepping out of your comfort zone, but I promise you’ll feel more confident and capable because of it!

Joining a group hiking trip with me means you will meet new, like-minded friends and create true, deep connections through your shared experience on the trail and in nature. While some women come with a friend, most sign up solo, which is the perfect opportunity to “take a solo trip” without actually going alone 🙂

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN FUNCHAL

Arrival in Funchal, transfer to the hotel. 
 

Group welcome dinner at Terra Food Concept.

 

Day 2

LEVADA DO CALDEIRAO VERDE

Hike Madeira’s famous “levadas” — ancient irrigation canals turned scenic walking trails — through lush green landscapes, tunnels, and waterfalls in the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva Forest. 

Lunch at Quinta do Furão and stop at the iconic Santana Houses

Day 3

PICO DO AREEIRO, PICO RUIVO & ACHADA DO TEIXEIRA

This spectacular sunrise hike connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo and finishes at Achada do Teixeira. It’s one of the most iconic and rewarding trails to the highest point in Madeira, offering dramatic mountain scenery, jagged ridgelines, and panoramic views above the clouds.

(7.5 miles, 5-7 hours, challenging)

Day 4

SEIXAL BEACH & NATURAL POOLS

Spend the day exploring Madeira’s north coast, from the black-sand beauty of Praia do Seixal to the volcanic natural pools of Seixal and Porto Moniz, perfect for swimming and relaxing by the sea. Capture breathtaking views at the Véu da Noiva waterfall and end your adventure with a golden sunset at Miradouro da Ponta da Ladeira.

Day 5

LEVADA DAS 25 FONTES

Hike the famous PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes in Madeira’s lush Rabaçal valley through the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva Forest with tunnels, waterfalls, and vibrant greenery. The highlight is the magical 25 Springs lagoon, where dozens of waterfalls cascade into a serene, moss-covered pool. 
(5.5 miles, 3-4 hours, moderate to challenging)

Day 6

PONTA DE SAO LOURENCO 

Begin with a sunrise at Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto, where golden light spills over Madeira’s dramatic eastern cliffs and the vast Atlantic. Then hike the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço trail, a coastal path of volcanic rock, sweeping sea views, and unique arid beauty ending near Casa do Sardinha — perfect for exploring or a refreshing swim. You’ll end with a boat transfer from Ponta de São Lourenço to Quinta do Lorde (20 min).
(2.5 miles, 2-3 hours, easy)
