St Croix, Virgin Islands. It’s the Eastern Most Point in the United States, which is a cool box to tick and photo to snap. But St Croix is so much more than that! This less-touristy USVI offers a rainforest at one end, and an arid landscape at the other. It offers world-class snorkeling and scuba diving, some great hiking, excellent sailing conditions, and the ability to kayak a bioluminescent bay by moonlight! And that’s only the beginning.
ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS:
- BIOLUMINESCENT BAY
Kayaking the bioluminescent bay of St Croix is a once in a lifetime type experience. We highly recommend planning your trip around the accessible dates for seeing the bioluminescence. And if you’re gonna do it, you have to go with the see through kayaks! You’ll arrive just before sunset to get settled with your kayaks and then head off to the bay just before dark. The bioluminescence is the closest thing you’ll get to flying through the galaxy among millions of stars. And if you’re lucky you’ll get to see glow in the dark jelly fish too. We recommend this tour operator not only for their high quality clear boats, but also because they are the most strict about preserving the bioluminescence and monitoring their guests to protect it: http://seathrukayaksvi.com/ - Hike to the Tide Pools at Annaly Bay
When on-island, ask a local… That’s the easiest way to get the best directions. It’s a challenging hike, don’t go in the high-sun heat of the day. But it’s well worth the effort! For more information, read up here: http://www.stcroixtourism.com/st_croix_pictures/annaly-bay-tide-pools.htm - Sail to Buck Island
Buck Island is a protected National Monument only a mile off shore from St Croix. Only certified boats are allowed to visit the island and take groups snorkeling along the underwater trail. This helps control the impact on the reef and the island. Excellent snorkeling and a fun short climb to the top of a large hill with beautiful views. And the sail to and from the island is more than half the fun!!
