We’ve been to Greece several times and every time it’s better than before. From the beautiful history still well maintained in Athens to the pristine beaches on the islands, there’s something for everyone. If you’ve never been before and aren’t sure what to do or where to go, reach out for more suggestions or join our group trip in June! Below is why we think you should visit Greece in 2022.
The Locals
One of our favorite things about Greece and travel in general is the LOCALS. Greek people some of the most friendly and hospitable people in Europe – maybe even the world! Booking.com even deemed Greece one of the most welcoming places on Earth in 2018 based on guest reviews.
Greek hospitality has a long history. In ancient Greece, there was a concept called, “Philoxenia“, which translates into “friendship with a guest”. It’s a tradition that states you should be friendly to strangers and show them generosity. This concept is still present in Greece today, and it’s very obvious the second you step off the airplane. On top of all of that, they’re so much fun. They love celebrating everything and enjoying each day to the fullest!
The Food
A very close second is the FOOD. If you’re a big foodie, you’ll be in heaven here. Greece has a mixture of so many different dishes! The country is surrounded by all the good things you can find in the sea, beautiful and ripe olive trees, delicious feta cheese, yoghurt, lamb, eggplant, tomatoes, pomegranate, and more. They have so much to offer!
Top favorites include: Fava, Tzatziki, and Taramasalata, Gigantes – big beans in tomato sauce, Grilled feta cheese with sweet honey, Greek sausage (Loukaniko), Cretan and Greek Salad, Greek lamb chops, Moussaka, and Baklava.
But apart from the fresh produce and the great dishes that come with it, the eating style in Greece is also unique! It’s very common to go to a “meze” restaurant where you can order several small dishes and share it with friends and family. It’s similar to the Spanish tapas culture and something we love!
The Entry Requirements
Most importantly in this world we live in is that Greece is VERY easy to enter. The covid requirements have lifted and if you’re vaccinated you can enter without a covid test or any paperwork! Here are the exact entry requirements below as of March 23rd, 2022.
- Vaccination certificate indicating the holder has received a full vaccination series nine months before travelling or received a booster shot, which has no validity cap
- Certificate of recovery, valid for 180 days after the holder tests positive for the virus
- Test certificate indicating the holder was tested for COVID-19 within 72 hours of departure (PCR test) or 24 hours before arrival (rapid antigen test).
The Islands
Last but not least, you should visit Greece for the ISLANDS. They are probably the most exotic islands you’ll find in Europe with their white sandy beaches and turquoise water. There’s also a wide variety of options. From small, rustic vibes on Naxos where you can romp around on an ATV to stunning hotels in Santorini where you can walk around the tiny cobblestone streets, there’s an island for any occasion.
